Songs of the People

£20.00

The Henry Girls are sisters Karen, Lorna and Joleen McLaughlin from the most northerly part of Co. Donegal. Formed in 2001 after Lorna and Karen returned from Australia, where they began performing and writing songs, the trio became complete when youngest sister Joleen, then finishing her Leaving Certificate, joined as a promising harp and piano player. That year they recorded their first album, produced by Maire Breathnach, and have since released five further original studio albums, several EPs, and a live album of Boswell Sisters music (2020).

Their sound, infused with Donegal’s rich cultural heritage and a transatlantic flavour, has been described by Froots magazine as “full bodied and powerfully dynamic.” Blending traditional roots with contemporary elements has earned them commercial success and critical acclaim internationally. Beyond albums, they have created music for theatre, dance, children’s shows, film and television, including the Canadian/Irish production A Shine of Rainbows (2008), for which they received an IFTA nomination. Praised for their sensational harmonies, The Evening Herald commends their seamless blending of tone and resonance, Irish Music Magazine notes their confident musicianship, and The Huffington Post urges America to discover them.

Niall Hanna & Rachel McGarrity

Niall Hanna, from Derrytresk, Co. Tyrone, is a traditional folk singer and songwriter. He rose to prominence in 2018 with his debut solo album Autumn Winds, which featured Ulster ballads alongside his own songs. The title track earned an RTÉ Folk Award nomination for Best Original Track, and Niall also received a nomination for Best Emerging Folk Artist. In 2024, he released his second solo album, The Roving Journeyman, featuring five new songs and six traditional ballads, with contributions from Damian McKee, Liam Bradley, Rachel McGarrity, and his brother Ciaran Hanna. Written between 2020 and 2024, the songs reflect themes of war, work, love, and local history.
