Niall Hanna — Traditional Singing
Niall Hanna is a traditional singer, guitarist and songwriter from Derrytresk, County Tyrone. His music is deeply rooted in his family's singing tradition, particularly the repertoire and influence of his late grandfather, renowned traditional singer Geordie Hanna. Niall combines that inherited Ulster singing tradition with guitar accompaniment and his own songwriting.
As a teenager he formed Reel It In with his brother Ciaran Hanna, Niall Murphy and Eamon Rooney, musicians who had met through Armagh Pipers Club. He later became involved in Belfast's traditional session scene and toured in Germany with The Rapparees.
After receiving an Arts Council Young Musicians' Platform Award in 2016, Niall began work on his debut solo album, Autumn Winds. Released in 2018, it brought together Ulster traditional songs and original compositions. The album earned two nominations at the inaugural RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards: Best Emerging Folk Artist and Best Original Folk Track for its title song.
His second solo album, The Roving Journeyman, appeared in 2024, combining newly written songs with traditional ballads dealing with work, war, love and local history.
Niall is also an experienced traditional singing and guitar tutor. In July 2026 he appeared as one of three TG4 Gradam Singers of the Year in Sounding the Peninsula at Earagail Arts Festival.
