Angelina Carberry — Banjo
Angelina Carberry is one of Ireland's most distinctive tenor banjo players and was named TG4 Gradam Ceoil Musician of the Year in 2021. Born in Manchester into a County Longford family steeped in traditional music, she initially learned tin whistle before following her grandfather Kevin Carberry into banjo playing. Her father Peter is a noted accordion player, and traditional music has been transmitted through several generations of the Carberry family.
After moving to Galway in the late 1990s, Angelina recorded Memories from the Holla with her father Peter and guitarist and pianist John Blake. She subsequently became a member of the all-female group The Bumblebees and toured with legendary musicians Tony MacMahon and Barney McKenna.
Angelina's highly individual, rhythmically distinctive banjo playing can be heard on her solo recordings An Traidisún Beoand Pluckin' Mad, as well as duet recordings and numerous collaborations. In 2023 she became the sixth recipient of the Mike Flanagan Banjo Award.
Alongside her performing career, Angelina is an experienced and highly regarded teacher who has tutored at traditional music festivals and summer schools in Ireland, Britain and North America. She is also appearing as a banjo tutor at Féile Cheoil Larry Reynolds in September 2026.
